Le nouveau « marathon de New York » : quinze kilomètres sur 76 roues, Atlantis conquiert sa nouvelle demeure

[ Cape Canaveral, November 4, 2012 © rke, english below ] – Quelle sacrée journée. Il m'a fallu 16 heures d’action pour suivre la sortie finale d’Atlantis du VAB jusqu’au Centre des visiteurs du KSC. Plus qu’une balade, un véritable marathon. Debout à 4h du matin pour se présenter à 5h à l’office des badges. De là, comme journaliste étranger, je me suis fait « escorter » (pas comme un « escort-man ») jusqu’au centre de presse officiel tout près du VAB. 6h15, départ en bus (3 cars plein de journalistes et de photographes) pour ce VAB, même à quelques enjambées. 6h30, on plante nos caméras. Le moment est venu de guetter l’engin sortir de son hangar. Il part à reculons, on distingue son empennage, puis Atlantis tout entière. Il est 7h du matin. Le soleil se lève (on est encore à l’heure d’été) et voilà qu’on assiste à une splendide sortie, comme on voit dans les films, vous savez avec un beau lever de soleil rosâtre teinté de couleur bleu turquoise. Bref, ça vaut la chandelle.

07h30, hop dans le bus jusqu’au premier carrefour Kennedy Pkwy/NASA PKWY S.CAVE (voir plan). Là, on guette la navette le long d’une lagune. Il fait encore un peu frisquet, mais ça va chauffer. Dieu que c’est long. L’engin ne doit pas aller à plus de deux kilomètres-heure. On a le temps de faire clic-clac et paf ! Voilà qu’Atlantis s’arrête. Ben oui, il faut bien enlever les feux du carrefour, sinon ça ne passe pas (photo). 8h15, re-hop dans le bus ! Ouf, content d’être à nouveau assis. Pour se rendre au milieu de la C. Avenue. Et que c’est long jusqu’à ce qu’Atlantis pointe son nez, puis tout son entier. On attend debout jusqu’à 10h pour entendre les discours officiels avec notamment le directeur de la NASA Charles Bolden, l’astronaute du dernier vol d’Atlantis, STS 135, Chris Ferguson. Et le passage de la fanfare. 12h, on remonte dans le bus pour nous rendre au Exploration Park pour les festivités, populaires celle-là. Atlantis pose pour tous. Sur le terrain de ce futur Parc d’exploration, encore rien n’est en chantier. Le KSC en a profité pour exposer de nouvelles maquettes, dont XCOR, une réplique de la cabine Dragon de Space-X, la navette Dream Chaser de Sierra Nevada. Bref de quoi attiser la curiosité de, à vue d’œil 2'000 personnes. 15h hop dans le bus à nouveau, direction le centre des visiteurs où il nous faut attendre jusqu’à 17h pour voir passer Atlantis le long de la NASA PKWY. Là voilà qui passe devant nous. Elle se gare devant son nouvel hangar pour le plaisir des privilégiés qui ont obtenu le passe-droit d’entrer vers son garage. 19h, le spectacle-surprise des feux d’artifice vient booster la beauté du spectacle. La nuit vient de tomber. On nous appelle. Allez, montez dans le bus, on rentre au centre de presse. Mais je dois revenir au Gate 3, là où j’ai ma voiture. 20h, me voilà au bercail, comme Atlantis, qui vient de parcourir ses 15 derniers kilomètres sur 76 roues. New York a annulé son marathon, moi pas.

The new « marathon of New York » : 9,3 miles on 76 wheels, Atlantis conquers « her » new home

What mighty day ! It took us 16 hours of action to follow the final output Atlantis from the VAB (Vehicle Assembly Building) to KSC Visitor Center. More than a walk, a real marathon. Wake up at 4am to submit at 5am to the Badges Office (Gate 3). Like a foreing journalist, I got « escort » (not as an escort man) until to the News Center near the famous VAB. 6:15 am : departure by bus (3 buses full of journalists and photographers) for VAB, even within walking distance. 6:30, we plant our cameras directly face up the big building. The time has come to watch the machine out of its hangar. Atlantis went backwards, we see its tail, then shuttle whole. Wouah ! It ‘s 7am. The sun rises (we are still in summer again) and now we are witnessing a splendid output, as we see in movies, you know with a beautiful sunrise tinged pinkish color turquoise. In short, it's worth a glance.

7:30, hop ( !) in the bus until the first crossroads Kennedy Pkwy / NASA PKWY S.CAVE (see map). Here we watch the shuttle along a lagoon. It's still a little chilly, but it will heat up. God, this is long. The machine must not go more than 1,2 mile an hour. It was time to clickety-clack and a big-bang shoot ! Atlantis stops. Yeah, it must remove the lights of the intersection. Because shuttle does not pass (photo). 8:15, re-hop (!) in the bus! Phew (!), glad to be sitting again to get to the middle of the C. Avenue. And waht a long trip until Atlantis show her (that’s a girl plane for me) nose. Expected up until 10am to hear the official speeches including the NASA director Charles Bolden and astronauts, whose the last flight commander of Atlantis (STS 135), Chris Ferguson. And the march of the band of front and along the shuttle. At 12, we go back in the bus to get to the Exploration Park for the festivities, and popular one. I’m tired because I have to stand long hours. Atlantis poses like a samrt girl, for all, for us, for me. Ahhh…

The field of the future Exploration Park is yet nothing in the works and there are many place to do a big exhibit. KSC took the opportunity to expose new models, including XCOR, a replica of the cabin of Space-X Dragon, Dream Chaser Shuttle of Sierra Nevada. So, what something to arouse our curiosity. Visibly, there are around 2'000 people.  

3pm, hop (!) in the bus again and and again to go to the Visitor Center where we have to wait until 5pm to see Atlantis go along NASA Pkwy. The girl-plane passes before us. She pulls into its new hangar for the pleasure of the privileged who have obtained the pass to the right to enter in his garage. 7pm, there is a show surprise by fireworks just show for a beauty boost. The night has fallen. Press escorter called us. Come on, get on the bus, we returned to the VAB News Center. But… I must return to Gate 3 and come back the same way, where I have my car. 8pm, I’m at home, like Atlantis the space-girl just browse her (its) last 15 kilometers of on 76 wheels. New York has cancelled the famous marathon. Me… not !
